Many people are confused when it comes to understanding the difference between Designing & Staging. Some can’t see how it is not the same thing, as they both entail coming into a space and transforming it into something beautiful & stylish. And yes, that is part of the truth, but the fact is that Staging is in fact, the complete opposite of Designing.

Designer’s job is to find out about the lifestyle, taste and preferences of an occupant / client. Find out what their ‘dream house’ vision is and make that vision a reality. In other words, designing is all about turning a house into a home – that will purely reflect the client’s taste and style. Designing is all about creating individualistic environments – spaces that will feature unique colour schemes, personal items & photos spread throughout the clients home, that will make that space truly unique and exclusive.

The purpose of staging, however, is to create an environment that will appeal to the greater number of potential buyers. Therefore, the aim of staging is to De-Personalize as much as possible and create universally appealing spaces. Stager’s job is to thoroughly examine the property, inside and out, through the buyer’s eyes and make necessary suggestions and recommendations in order to minimize the property’s flaws, while maximizing its utmost potential.

Successful staging will show off the house, its functionality, space and character. Whereas, design is all about combining owner’s taste & style, while staying true to the character of the house.

Where can I buy that wall piece?
Great article! Also, in design, form follows function, as the maxim goes. Meaning that the function of a space is most important. With staging, it’s the appearance, the feeling. That’s secondary in good design. If its beautiful but useless, it’s poor design.
